Late November through December is one of the calmest times to visit. Harvest crowds are gone, vineyards are dormant, and winter tasting rooms move guests into cozy indoor salons and cellars. If you are still deciding when to come, our best time to visit guide compares every season, and the Napa Valley events calendar covers the rest of the year.

Most visitors spend 2–3 days, which is enough to catch one evening event and still taste at a few top wineries. Event dates below come from official organizers; where a 2026 date has not been announced, we say so and link to the source.

Napa Valley Holiday Events and Light Festivals

    Santa Train Jolly Journeys

Downtown NapaSelect dates, November 27 to December 23, 2026

The Napa Valley Wine Train's holiday program is mainly a family and children's experience: a station visit with Santa, cookies and cocoa, and four ride options ranging from a short cookie car to holiday dinner seatings. It departs the McKinstry Street station in downtown Napa. Adults planning a wine-focused ride should look at the regular wine tour options instead.

Seatings, prices and daytime departures vary by date; check the official calendar before planning around it.

    Napa Christmas Parade

Downtown NapaEarly December (2026 date not yet announced)

Downtown Napa's long-running evening parade brings lighted floats, live music and Santa to Second, Brown and Third streets, and organizers note it is canceled in bad weather. Make a night of it with dinner from our Napa Valley restaurant guide. Confirm the 2026 date and any related tree-lighting activities with the Downtown Napa Association.

Holidays in Yountville: Festival of Lights

    YountvilleNovember 22, 2026 to January 1, 2027

The Yountville Chamber's six-week holiday season lights up Washington Street, starting with the town and tree lighting. It is an easy evening stroll between tasting rooms, shops and the dining that makes Yountville a strong base for a romantic winter getaway. Individual event dates are published on the Chamber's site.

    Calistoga Lighted Tractor Parade

    CalistogaSaturday, December 5, 2026, 7 to 8 PM

Tractors, vintage farm rigs, utility vehicles and floats decked in lights roll down Lincoln Avenue in Calistoga, a nod to the town's farming roots. Arrive early for curbside space, then warm up afterward; our spas and wellness guide covers the town's hot-spring soaks for the next morning.

    Merry Meritage

South NapaIce rink open from mid-November into early January; tree lighting in late November

The Meritage Resort and Spa sets up an outdoor ice skating rink on its Village Lawn, with ticketed 90-minute sessions, a holiday village with an artisan market, and an annual tree lighting that opens the season. It is one of the more family-friendly options in the valley; pair it with ideas from Napa Valley with kids. Check the resort's calendar for 2026 session hours and the tree-lighting date.

    Where to Stay

Christmas Stays Paired With Holiday Events

Pick your base by the event you most want to see. Each property below sits on or near one of the holiday events above, so you can walk or take a short drive instead of hunting for parking on a parade night.

Rates follow the seasonal pattern in our Napa Valley hotels guide: prices can climb 80–100% on harvest weekends, while midweek stays from November through March are usually the year's lowest. Weekends around parades and tree lightings fill first, so book those early. For more options, browse the full Napa Valley lodging directory.

    Winter Tasting & Dining

Fireside Tastings, Wine Caves and Christmas Dining

Winter is when Napa tasting moves indoors. Many wineries shift guests from patios to fireside salons, barrel rooms and wine caves, and the smaller crowds make for slower, more personal tastings. Standard tasting fees run about $40–$75, with premium and reserve experiences at $100 and up. Our best wineries guide covers the estates worth booking, and the cheap wine tasting guide lists lower-cost tasting rooms.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dining

Holiday hours vary a lot. Many independent restaurants and tasting rooms close or run reduced hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and some publish special menus only a few weeks ahead. Hotel restaurants are usually the most dependable choice, such as Charlie Palmer Steak at Archer Hotel Napa or Solbar at Solage in Calistoga.

Before you go: check holiday hours and book directly with each restaurant and winery well before December. Don't count on getting a walk-in table on December 24 or 25.

    FAQ

    Christmas in Napa Valley FAQs

Are Napa Valley wineries open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day?

Many wineries close on Christmas Day and run shorter hours on Christmas Eve, and hours change by year. Check each winery's holiday schedule and book ahead; a guided wine tour on December 23 or 26 is often the easier option.

What is the Napa Valley Wine Train Santa Train experience?

Santa Train Jolly Journeys is the Wine Train's holiday program, mainly for families and kids, with a Santa visit, cookies and cocoa, and several ride options. It departs downtown Napa on select dates from late November to December 23, 2026. Check winetrain.com for seatings and prices.

When do holiday lights and Christmas festivals begin in Napa Valley?

The season starts in late November. Yountville's Festival of Lights runs November 22, 2026 to January 1, 2027, Merry Meritage's ice rink opens in mid-November, and Calistoga's Lighted Tractor Parade is December 5, 2026. Our events calendar covers the rest of the year.

Is December a good month to visit Napa Valley for wine tasting?

Yes. Crowds are thin, midweek hotel rates are among the year's lowest, and tasting rooms move indoors to fireside salons and caves. Expect cooler, sometimes rainy days and shorter daylight. See our Napa on a budget guide to stretch an off-season trip further.

Can you find restaurants open on Christmas Day in Napa Valley?

Some, but plan ahead. Many independent restaurants close, while hotel restaurants such as Charlie Palmer Steak at Archer Hotel Napa and Solbar at Solage are the most dependable. Confirm hours and reserve directly well before December, and plan your rides with our getting around guide, since rideshares get scarce on holiday nights.
